SAN FRANCISCO—Two twelve-year-old boys were hit by a car on Wednesday, November 4, in the city’s Marina District. A 30-year-old woman identified as Kirsten Andereck, was arrested after suspected of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the incident.

According to San Francisco police officers, Andereck was driving a white Volkswagen Tiguan SUV, and had struck the boys at a crosswalk on Buchanan and Bay Street.

Both boys were taken to the San Francisco General Hospital where they remained in critical condition for life-threatening injuries, including head trauma and broken bones.

According to the San Francisco police, the two boys were thrown into the air from one crosswalk to another. Their shoes, backpacks, and other belongings were tossed an estimated 40 feet into the air and scattered all along the streets.

In an effort to increase safety measures, the city of San Francisco will be putting up additional stop signs in the area of the collision.

Residents in the area have reported that particular intersection of Buchanan and Bay is dangerous due to cars speeding across the roads. San Francisco Board of Supervisor member Mark Farrell reported that stop signs will be added in the following week.

The two boys were critically injured and sustained injuries to their heads and broke several bones. Andereck has been charged with two felony drunk-driving charges for causing great bodily injury and two counts of child endangerment. The suspect posted $200,100 bail, and is slated to appear in court next week.

According to District Attorney spokesperson Max Szabo, the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office has filed charges against Andereck.
