HOLLYWOOD—It was that sci-fi flick that caught audiences by surprise. “Sharknado” is a picture about massive sharks terrorizing residents throughout California, by air and by land and let’s not forget about the massive tornado filled with man-eating sharks.  The concept is so far-fetched is hard to believe this picture even got made.  I ask myself that question time and time again, who comes up with these crazy plots.

The picture starring “Beverly Hills 90210” alum Ian Ziering and “American Pie” star Tara Reid is really bad, but it’s so bad it’s good. Think of “Sharknado” as the prime example of camp.  Ideas so far-fetched, characters so undeveloped, but the suspension of reality is so jarring its impossible to turn away from the television screen.  I was finally able to catch a glimpse of the picture nearly two weeks after all the hoopla and I couldn’t turn away from the screen.

I’m laughing at myself for watching the movie, but at the same time I was so engulfed in how bad the acting was, the plot and the concept it was the perfect Saturday night movie in my opinion.  Who can imagine sharks on freeways or a human being able to slice a shark in half with a chainsaw? You can’t see it happening, that’s what makes the movie so great.  It takes the concept of things that we know can never happen and throws them in our face anyway.

In case you’ve been living under a rock, a sequel to the original flick has already been announced.  The concept gets even crazier, as the sharks will invade; wait for it, New York City.  I know!  The producers are currently in the casting stages, but Ian Ziering is expected to make a return, while Tara Reid is still up in the air.  Submissions for titles have been coming in from fans via social media.  I was thinking perhaps, “Sharknado 2: Sharkmageddon in the Big Apple.” Has a nice ring to it doesn’t it?

For all of you shark lovers out there, the Syfy channel is not done with the shark craze, as a new original flick “Ghost Shark” will hit the small screen in August.  Trust me I nearly died laughing when I heard this concept.  A great white shark wrongly killed comes back from the dead to wreak havoc.  If you’re around water you’re not safe. This includes the faucet, the bathtub, the pool, the sprinklers, puddles of water, etc.  If you’re by water, you’re a goner. The bigger question probing minds will want to know is just how in the world will they stop this ghost fiend?  Knowing Syfy, it’ll be something just as ridiculous as “Sharknado.”

Look at it this way, “Sharknado” has indeed heightened people’s interest in the shark phenomenon.  I’m just wondering if the plot for its sequel will be just as bad as its predecessor.
