WESTWOOD—Devon Modster, once a candidate for the starting quarterback job for UCLA, announced his decision to transfer universities on Saturday, September 22. Modster announced his decision via Twitter.
The sophomore quarterback’s decision came after the Bruins started off 0-3 under new Head Coach Chip Kelly. Wilton Speight started the first game of the season, while Dorian Thompson-Robinson started in the school’s last two games. Modster was third string on the depth chart until he transferred.
Modster is a redshirt sophomore. The Rancho Santa Margarita native was part of a six-player competition for the starting position. He is known as a dual-threat quarterback.
He will leave UCLA having appeared in five games. He played in four games last season and one game this season. During his time as a Bruin, Modster completed 51 of 79 passes for 671 yards and four TDs.
“First and foremost I would like to thank my teammates for always grinding with me day in and day out, creating memories that I will cherish for a lifetime. I would like to thank Coach Mora for giving me the opportunity to play and attend such a prestigious school! Also I’d like to thank the Bruin fans who continued to support my teammates [and] I throughout these years. I’d like to thank Coach Kelly and the strength coaches for allowing me to continue to play the game I love, but I’ve decided to leave UCLA and pursue other opportunities. Best of luck to the Bruin families!,” said Modster in a statement.
