HOLLYWOOD—Whew, Jordan Peele’s follow-up to his 2017 hit “Get Out” took the box-office by storm in a major way. There is something about horror when done right that just draws audiences to the theater. His latest psychological thriller, “Us” screamed up a delicious $70.3 million during its opening weekend.
That gives “Us” the third largest opening of all-time for a horror flick with the 2017 remake of “It” which earned over $123 million, and the 2018 remake/sequel “Halloween” which earned $76 million during their opening weekends.
Previous box-office champ, “Captain Marvel” dropped to second place with $35 million. After being in theaters for close to 3 weeks, the superhero adventure has crossed the $300 million mark at the domestic box-office. The animated flick, “Wonder Park” dropped to third place with $9 million bringing its domestic tally closer to $30 million.
Landing in fourth place is the teen drama “Five Feet Apart” with $8.8 million. Rounding out the top five was the animated flick “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World” with $6.5 million. Since its release in February the third chapter in the franchise is just a mere $5 million from crossing the $150 million mark at the domestic box-office.
The thrilling debut of “Us” might be short-lived with the live-action version of the classic “Dumbo” hitting the screen on March 29. It’ll be a battle for sure between a flying elephant and a bunch of doppelgangers.
