SACRAMENTO—Lavinia Kelly, 33, was hospitalized after eating nacho cheese she purchased from Valley Oak Food and Fuel – a gas station in Sacramento, California.

The incident transpired on April 21, where Kelly stopped at the gas station for a snack on her way home from work. She purchased a pack of Doritos to go with some nacho cheese dipping sauce. Shortly after eating the chips, Kelly became fatigued.

The next day, Kelly complained of double vision and was taken to Sutter Medical Center. She was sent home within a few hours, but her condition worsened, where she started vomiting and experienced difficulty breathing. According to the Sacramento Bee, the victim was rushed to the emergency room.

She was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit the next day. Kelly continues to experience a drastic loss of motor control, and is unable keep her eyes open, at will.

Officials have speculated that toxins in the nacho cheese sauce may have caused Kelly to contract botulism poisoning. Botulism is a kind of poisoning that affects a drastic loss of motor control in the body. Officials are still investigating the exact cause of the illness.

Sacramento County health officials have confirmed five cases of botulism in patients who ate at the Valley Oak Food and Fuel gas station, and are investigating three other probable cases and one suspect case. All nine patients are still hospitalized, the Sacramento Bee reported.
