HOLLYWOOD—To a makeup artist, every face is an empty canvas. That, however, is where the metaphor seems to end. Makeup is transitory, a fleeting illusion. But there is a beauty to transitory things, and a value as well. Makeup is like a frame around a picture. The frame doesn’t make the art better, but it does make it look somewhat better.

Makeup doesn’t make a better person, but applied properly, it makes a person look better and, feel better as well. In cinema, makeup helps to define and authenticate a characterization and clarify its historical placement through recreating the beauty trends of the period during which the story is set. Such choices reveal subtleties about the character’s personality: her taste, how she perceives herself, and how she wishes to present herself and be perceived.

There was glitz, bling, fashion and beauty at the Los Angeles International Make-up Artist Trade Shown known as (IMATS). The usual exhibitors were there from our dear friend Eve Pearl to Sigma Cosmetics. The event had the usual presentations, workshops, the IMATS shop, which sold merchandise from T-shirts to lipstick pens. The impressive Make-up Museum had a display of movie and TV creations, including the “Beauty and the Beast” head, “Close Encounters” bust to the magnificent statue of Humphrey Bogart.
