HOLLYWOOD—There were indeed some fireworks from new flicks that invaded theaters over the Fourth of July weekend, but it was a little fish that reigned supreme for the third consecutive weekend. Yep, “Finding Dory’ retained the top spot at the box-office with an impressive $41 million from (Friday-Sunday), the flick will top out at around $50 million when the Fourth of July numbers are counted. In about 3 weeks, this sequel is only about $15 million shy from crossing the $400 million mark at the domestic box-office.

Landing in second place was “The Legend of Tarzan” which produced a not so impressive $45 million during the four-day weekend. While many might expect that gross to be decent, considering the movie cost close to $200 million to make, that’s a failure in all terms when we discuss Hollywood.

Proving that a solid sequel can still peak the interest of audiences was the “The Purge: Election Year” which debuted to an impressive $34 million during the four-day holiday weekend. Not bad for a flick that is tackling a touchy subject during a hotly debated election year. For a flick that only cost $10 million to make, it’s safe to argue the flick has more than earned its production cost and some back.

Not impressing audiences was the Steven Spielberg directed flick “The BFG” which only earned a little over $20 million during the weekend. I’m thinking many more people were geared towards wanting to catch “Finding Dory” instead of this flick. Rounding out the top five was the sequel “Independence Day: Resurgence” which added another $20 million to its tally for the holiday weekend. I’d make the case, that if the flick crosses the $100 million mark at the domestic box-office it would be lucky.

Also earning solid box-office receipts over the weekend were “The Shallows,” “Central Intelligence” and “Free State of Jones.” Hmm, I’m thinking “Finding Dory’ will hold its grip on the box-office for one more weekend, because I can’t see how “Mike and Dave Need Wedding Date” will unseat such a box-office titan. If there is one flick that will dethrone the little fish, it’s likely to be the “Ghostbusters” remake arriving July 15.
