HAYWARD—A 16-year-old boy was shot Monday, January 23 in a drive-by shooting in Alameda County near Hayward, authorities reported.

Around 6:45 p.m. deputies responded to a report of a shooting on Princeton Street at Smalley Avenue, which is just outside Hayward city limits. The victim was found lying in the street. He was pronounced dead at the scene noted Sgt. Ray Kelly of the Alameda County Sheriff’s Department. The victim has been identified as Lamar Murphy.

On Tuesday, January 24, his family and friends held a vigil at the spot where the teenager was killed at the corner of Princeton Street and Smalley Avenue. His father Phillip Rushing said that Lamar was walking home from a nearby store when the shooting happened. Rushing reported his son was non-violent, non-confrontational, and was not involved in any gang activity.

Witnesses heard multiple gunshots. Deputies believe a vehicle might be involved in the shooting. The Alameda County Sheriff’s Department are looking for two suspects who may have targeted Murphy.

For the Alameda County Sheriff’s Department, it is the first reported homicide of the year. The Department also investigates crimes outside the jurisdiction of towns and cities in the county, said Sgt. Ray Kelly.
