SAN FRANCISCO—On Monday, May 11, former San Francisco resident Anatoly Smolkin, 41, posted a threatening comment on The Head of the School’s social media account. In his comment, he described shooting people in response to the school’s program. School officials noted they flagged two prior incidents involving Smolkin. The Head of the School noticed the threats and required police security.
On May 12, Smolkin entered another school parking lot, confronting an adult and making grave threats against the people within the building. On May 13, Smolkin returned to the same school and started making threats to the Head of the School about the incident that happened the previous evening before classes started. It resulted in a lengthy lockdown for the school, trapping both students and staff inside.
San Francisco Police Department identified Smolkin from surveillance video and apprehended him. During the ensuing arrest, he threatened San Francisco leaders with death threats if he was not released.
On May 15, 2026, Smolkin was charged with two counts of making threats of violence at a sensitive location (Penal Code 422.3(a)), two counts of making criminal threats (Penal Code 422(A)) and two counts of resisting an executive officer (Penal Code 69(a)), which are all felonies.
The criminal complaint was committed during his felony probation, where he was guilty of prior felonies. He was charged in 10 prior convictions for resisting an executive officer (Penal Code 69(a)) on March 24, 2026, which was less than two months before the most recent incidents. He was arraigned on May 15, 2026 at the Hall of Justice. Smolkin was denied bail until trial due to public safety concerns; his probation was revoked.
