SAN FRANCISCO—In Castro District, there was a shoplifting incident where a bottle of shampoo was lifted.
The manager, Guang Hong, was alerted of this shoplifter. Hong then proceeded to confront the shoplifter, and the shoplifter in question then returned the item. The shoplifter was charged with petty theft (PC490.2) and battery (PC 242). Then the shoplifter left the store.
Then things escalated. After precisely one minute had passed by, Hong noticed this individual still outside the store. He confronted this person again, shouting and pointing with his keys. Then he charged and punched the individual with his keys, sticking it out of his fist. He punched the individual in the face with his keys, which stuck out of his hand, with a final kick, until the other one collapsed to the ground in a heap.
Hong was found guilty of assaulting a man in the Castro District on Monday, July 14, 2025, in a trial by jury. He was convicted of assault with force likely to produce bodily harm (PC 245(a)(4)).
The case against Hong was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Max Draskovich with District Attorney Investigators Jesus Mendoza, Ted Martin and Marisa Sullivan backing him up. They were able to develop a strong and stable case against Hong with help from San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) Mission Station.
Hong is currently out of custody, and his sentencing hearing is Friday, August 15, 2025.
