SAN FRANCISCO—On the afternoon of Wednesday, October 22, 2025, a SFALERT was sent out to San Francisco residents to inform them of a technical issue that involved the Muni Metro light-rail service near Powell Station that had been confirmed by the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA).

There was an update on SFMTA’s X/Twitter social media website at 2:54 p.m. that said an overhead wiring crew was at the scene to confirm the wire was down. Inbound K Ingleside trains were then rerouted.

According to KRON4, by three o’clock in the afternoon, there was no service at all between Embarcadero Station and Caltrain Station. SFMTA crewmembers were at the scene to solve the issue at hand, but they had given no definite time when full service for the underground railways will resume as usual.

According to ABC7, at 5:37 p.m., the technical issues caused problems for Muni train riders. Instead of using the underground railway system, riders had to use the alternative option of riding the shuttle. This bus delay will not be easy for rush-hour commuters. Muni riders should expect extended wait period and/or delays in San Francisco downtown from a congestion on eastbound of the Bay Bridge.

The train stations that were impacted were those travelling through Market Street. The outbound trains were being run manually earlier in the day, but now they had stopped moving through the tunnel.

There were residual delays expected throughout the underground railway as crewmembers cleared a drainage clog at the Powell Street Station, resuming underground railway service. There may also be delays that were connected to the aboveground bus lines.

By 7:53, a SFALERT was sent out that the delay at the underground railways at Powell Station was cleared, and full service resumed.
