SAN FRANCISCO—Home to championship teams and iconic sports moments, demolition has officially begun on San Francisco’s iconic Candlestick Park.
Labeled “The Stick,” the stadium was known for wind, fog, and chilly temperatures born from the nearby San Francisco Bay. Formerly the home field of both the San Francisco Giants and 49ers, The Stick is also known as the last venue where the Beatles performed together.
Demolition began with stadium ramps and will continue with the structure’s upper segments. Amid health concerns of nearby residents, the current demolition process was chosen in favor of plan to implode the stadium.
Candlestick Park will be replaced by a new development that will include houses, a hotel, and a shopping center. It will be many weeks before ground will break on the new development.
