Garcia grew up in the Bay Area. He led the band from its formation in the '60s, until his death in 1995.  Under his guidance, the group found much acclaim, and Garcia's talent so too flourished.  He was ranked in the top 20 on Rolling Stone's "The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time ," which was published in 2007.

August 1, was officially dubbed "Jerry Day". Fans gathered at the Jerry Garcia Amphitheater in McClaren Park to honor the memory of their beloved idol, his life and the music he helped to produce. Included in the festivities were various performances from the Grateful Dead tribute band Front Street, as well as the JGB Band, Marvin Seals and Grammy winner Peter Rowan.  The event was free to attend, but donations were welcomed and those who gave were given seating in the reserved section. The donations were used to support Jerry Day as well as provide for parks and other features within the community.

Over 2,000 people showed up to take part in this year's affair. Since its start in 2002, the event has been gaining momentum and Jerry Day 2011 planning is already underway, promising to be a great time for Dead Heads or anyone just looking to have a fun day at the park!
