BEVERLY HILLS—Now the awards season has officially kicked off! The 73rd Annual Golden Globes ceremony was held at the famed Beverly Hilton Hotel on Sunday, January 10. The stars were out in full-force of the first possible predictor of how things could possibly turn out for the rest of the awards season. This year’s ceremony was hosted by Ricky Gervais who in my honest opinion has proven to be a sensational host. Not afraid to poke fun at celebrities and deliver a bit of risqué dialogue and jabs at the same time.
The night’s big winner was none other than “The Revenant” which stole the momentum that has been growing for “Spotlight” by winning the Best Motion Picture-Drama. Hmm, could “The Revenant” be the sleeper hit that takes the prize at the Academy Awards, we’ll find out in a month. With 3 wins under its belt, “The Revenant” had a very good night.
While the competitive race for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama went to Brie Larson for her performance in “Room.” The actress was quite gracious while on the stage. As expected Leonardo DiCaprio won the GG for Actor in a Motion Picture Drama for his work in “The Revenant.” The actor received a standing ovation from the crowd as he took to the stage for his prize.
While Jim Carrey made his return to the public spotlight. He delivered some massive jokes that definitely had everyone in the crowd laughing the entire time he was on stage. Best Motion Picture Musical or Comedy went to “The Martian” which Ridley Scott did his best to continue his speech beyond being played off by the music.
Gervais kicked of the show by patronizing the celebrities in the room with a glass of beer near the podium. He talked about NBC being a fair and partial network because the network didn’t have a single nomination across the board. He poked fun at Bruce Jenner now known as Caitlyn Jenner in comparison to himself and the female race. He even talked about Jeffrey Tambor and his performance on “Transparent.” I mean Ricky even joked about Ben Affleck being faithful to Matt Damon and poked fun at Mel Gibson before bringing him to the stage. Ouch!
Roman Polanski, “The Martian,” Jennifer Lawrence and the gender pay gap were all big jokes in the room. He even talked about how winning the Golden Globe is worthless and compared it to people taking pics for a selfie and paying for the top prize. He even made fun of the night’s first presenters Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill, who dressed as the bear from “The Revenant.”
Morgan Freeman presented the prize for Best Director to Alejandro Inarritu for “The Revenant.” That win was a bit of a surprise, because many pegged Ridley Scott or George Miller to capture the prize, which I suspect will be the case come Oscar-time.
Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture went to Kate Winslet for “Steve Jobs” who was utterly stunned by her win. She was quite speechless while on the stage. For Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture the Golden Globe went to Sylvester Stallone “Creed” who received a thunderous ovation from the entire audience as he took to the stage to accept his award. Ok people, it looks like Stallone could be a shoo-in for that Oscar in the acting category in February.
Winning the award for Supporting Actress in a TV series was Maura Tierney “The Affair.” Andy Samberg delivered a few laughs while presenting for Lead Actress in a TV Comedy or Musical and the GG went to Rachel Bloom “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.” That was indeed a shock for a series on the CW network that literally not many people had an idea about and she spoke with a level of crazy energy that was manic. “Mozart in the Jungle” won Best TV Comedy, and I think not many people have an idea what that show is about.
The Golden Globe for Best Limited Series or TV Movie was awarded to “Wolf Hall.” Actor in a Limited Series or TV Movie had a few technical glitches, but the prize was handed to Oscar Isaac “Show Me a Hero.” Supporting Actor in a TV series went to Christian Slater for “Mr. Robot.”
The winner for Lead Actor in a Drama Series went to Jon Hamm “Mad Men” who was quite gracious while accepting his award on stage. A wickedly funny moment at the ceremony happened between Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Schumer who showcased their true friendship to the crowd. Guys, I can definitely see these two hosting and awards show in the near future. Amy Adams presented the award for Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical to Matt Damon “The Martian.” Damon was quite honest and sincere on stage during his acceptance speech.
The Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature went to “Inside Out,” which I must say is a shoo-in for the Oscar in my opinion. Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell had a funny skit while presenting the award for Best Screenplay to Aaron Sorkin “Steve Jobs.” The prize for Best Actor in a TV Comedy or Musical went to Gael Garcia Bernal for “Mozart in the Jungle.” Bit of a shocker there as he took the prize that seemed like a lock for Jeffrey Tambor.
Best Foreign Language Film was a victory for “Son of Saul.” Winning a Golden Globe for Lead Actress in a Limited Mini-Series or TV Movie was Lady Gaga who was in tears as she took the stage to collect her prize. It was definitely one of those acceptance speeches that ranked top-notch for the night. Pure, real emotion. Sam Smith picked up a GG for Best Original Song for “Writings on the Wall.”
Who would win the Golden Globe for Best TV Drama? It was “Mr. Robot,” which didn’t surprise me as I didn’t expect “Empire” to be honored by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Tom Hanks took to the stage to emulate the Cecil B. DeMille candidate Mr. Denzel Washington. I mean Hanks had Washington’s mannerisms to a ‘T.’ It is indeed a longtime coming from Denzel whose body of work is quite impressive to say the least. It was a nice moment to see the Hollywood legend bring his entire family on stage during his acceptance speech. The fact that he kept forgetting names during his speech because he didn’t have his glasses kept the audience and viewers laughing.
The interesting race for Actress in a TV Drama went to Taraji P. Henson for “Empire” who passed out cookies on her way to the stage. It was definitely an animated acceptance speech, and one that I would rank as my second favorite of the night. To say it was ‘real’ would be an understatement. Actress in a Motion Picture Comedy went to Jennifer Lawrence “Joy” beating out her bestie Amy Schumer.
I must say it seemed like time flied at this year’s ceremony which is a good thing for a show that clocks in just under 3 hours! Gervais was perfection as always, I mean the Golden Globes has been on point with hosts for the past few years between Tiny Fey, Amy Poehler and Ricky, they sure know how to pick’em. While the Globes rarely have an impact on Oscar predications as the voting bodies are completely different, I expect plenty of surprises come Thursday morning.
