SAN FRANCISCO—On Sunday, March 1, a celebration took place at Embarcadero Plaza, formerly known as Justin Herman Plaza and the area near the Harry Bridges Plaza/Ferry Building, located in the Financial District (FiDi) in response to the death of Iranian leader Ayatollah Ali Hosseini Khamenei. Crowds gathered throughout the afternoon until 10 p.m.
Hosseini Khamenei, a Shia cleric and Iranian Supreme Leader from 1989 to his assassination in 2026, died after a collaboration with the United States and Israel involved strikes in Tehran on Saturday, February 28. The news was announced by President Donald J. Trump. Israeli state media confirmed the death in the wee hours of Sunday, March 1.
People in attendance, included local Iranian Americans hoping for a regime change. People cheered, played music and danced to celebrate the end of a 47-year-long oppression. A moment of silence was held to honor the fallen United States military service officers during combat in Iran.
There were protests in downtown San Francisco in response to the attacks on Iran by the U.S. and Israel.
