UNITED STATES—When you have a home you realize quickly that there are more responsibilities than you imagine. There are always things that have to be done, and with that it means you have to prepare for unexpected costs. What does that mean? Your water tank might break, you might encounter issues with your furnace, you need upgrades to your bathroom or kitchen, but that is nothing when it comes to the outdoors.
Why? There is a lot of work when it comes to those of us who have a yard. One of the biggest is that you have to cut the grass. Recently loss my yard person, which means it was time to purchase a lawn mower. I was not concerned about cutting grass because this was something I did as a kid and early into my teenage years. In other words, it was my first job.
So that was easily a $300 expense. On top of that I had to purchase a weedwhacker. Yes, this device is important to edging your lawn and giving that clean look. Here is the problem, that device is not easy to utilize. Then I needed a trimmer for bushes, shears for cutting down weeds and branches. Yeah, America it was a lot of equipment. When it comes to yardwork, it is literally an all-day event. You start in the morning, and it goes into the early evening if not until the night.
Once the grass was cut, the weeds were pulled and the bushes were trimmed. There was much more work to be down. I needed to power wash the concrete, pick up dog poop, and then realized the wooden gate is falling apart. So, guess what, it has to be replaced and that was not a pretty penny. It wasn’t just purchasing the gate, it was the labor to put up the gate, which took far longer than I expected.
I was impressed with the work done on the gate; the yard looked fantastic and it gave the aesthetics to the house more inviting and prestige to a point that I’m increasing the value of the property. Then we have perhaps the biggest expense of expenses when it comes to a home: the roof. Yes, the roofing on my property needed to be replaced. This is easily a $4k to $6k expense. It’s not just purchasing the materials, but the labor and that is where the costs tend to skyrocket for most. Not to mention you want a decent company or contractor to handle it. You get the wrong person, and you can have a massive headache later down the line.
It is all about getting the roof done in a timely fashion. I’ve seen some roofing companies do stellar work in a single day. Like remove the old roof and then complete the new roof within the same day. It’s just the thought of spending thousands of dollars and you don’t see anything right away. Yes, you protect your home from damage from flooding or other potential damage.
When your roof is in dire need, it is something you can ignore only for so long before it does become an issue that has to be fixed and addressed. So, you have to pull the trigger and make it happen. Long story short, there is a lot of money that comes into play when you own a home. You have to invest in fixing things, which means you should always have a rainy-day fund. You never know when something is going to go haywire and you don’t want to be in a pickle where you can’t fix a problem that turns into an even bigger problem.
