HELLO AMERICA!—She was born and raised in New York and proud of it, and her name is Scarlett Johansson. At age 13, she signed for a role in a film “The Horse Whisperer,” and it brought her critical acclaim. However, she makes it quite clear that she didn’t hop on a plane for Hollywood to make it big.
“I prepared myself for a career as an actor,” she said. “When I was 8 years old, I was lucky to be chosen to appear in an off-Broadway show “Sophistry” with Ethan Hawke. It was a fantastic experience watching all the experienced, well prepared actors who served as an inspiration for any new actor in this business.”
The “The Horse Whisperer” film which also starred Robert Redford and Kristin Scott Thomas added more fans to her side including Redford who exclaimed “Johansson is a remarkable actor with tremendous possibilities taking command of roles which only well experienced actors are offered. She’s 13 going on 30!” The film “Ghost World” followed with fair reviews. but critics gave the actress tremendous thumbs up for her efforts in the production.
“I do not regret appearing in films or productions which receive modest critical acclaim,” she said. “Because I learned so much during the time spent working with other actors, and writers who were obviously brilliant in what they were paid to do as well as all the production people signed for the production to make actors like myself look good. It is so easy to sit back and criticize when you have no idea what work and concentration it takes to put something on that screen which will turn on the viewing public in a positive way. It’s always a tremendous challenge and that is why we love what we do, to give a sense of reality while you’re sitting there in the theater for a few hours. Then too, we all understand and realize as always that of course you win some and then a chance you might lose as well.”
It was quite clear that Johansson would soon be considered a winner, especially after receiving critical acclaim for her roles in “Lost in Translation” playing a woman visiting Tokyo who has a relationship with a much older man played by Bill Murray. She later starred in the film “Girl with a Pearl Earring,” as a servant girl who is painted by famed artist Johannes Vermeer played by Colin Firth.
Johansson is still determined to make a name for herself as a singer. She has always had a passion for Broadway musicals and the really great songs and I have been working on an album of some very beautiful lyrics and music themes.
“I’m always opened for a new musical which might be challenging, the way the business is today, it’s best to be prepared, I learned that a long time ago.” She makes it very clear that as an actor, one must be prepared for any new challenge or idea which might excite your fans or audience who might count you for something in the world of Hollywood.
