WEST HOLLYWOOD—On Monday, the Golden Globe nominations were revealed, on Wednesday, December 13, the 2018 Screen Actors Guild Award nominees were unveiled and we might have an idea where things could be headed come Oscar Sunday in March 2018. Why? SAG comprises the heftiest number of the actors’ branch which is a strong predictor of who will and who won’t solidify nominations come January 2018.

The contenders were revealed by actresses Olivia Munn and Niecy Nash. Leading all nominees was the film “Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri” with a total of 4 nominations including Outstanding Cast in a Motion Picture. On the TV side of things, “Big Little Lies” leads the contenders with four nominations, all in the race for acting accolades. However, “Veep” did made the cut for SAG, in the Outstanding Comedy race and Lead Actress in a Comedy for Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

Were there surprises? Of course this is awards season people! I was stunned to see “Mudbound” earn an Outstanding Cast nomination, as well as the film “Get Out” and “The Big Sick.” However, missing from that category was “The Shape of Water,” and Steven Spielberg’s “The Post.” Another surprise is the omission of Octavia Spencer in the Supporting Actress race for her work in “The Shape of Water. Another stunner: Meryl Streep not getting a nomination for “The Post,” and perhaps the biggest stunner was seeing Jessica Chastain also left off the Lead Actress list for her work in “Molly’s Game.”
