SAN FRANCISCO—The San Francisco-Marin Food Bank is accepting turkey donations, in hopes of reaching its goal of collecting 2,000 birds in time for Thanksgiving.
With 2,000 turkeys in addition to financial gifts, the food bank will be able to provide 10 million plates of food to those who are unable to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday with a proper meal. The donations collected will be distributed to 70 partner agencies for Thanksgiving Day, including “Compass Family Services, Bernal Heights Neighborhood Center, and West Marin Senior Services,” according to the SF-Marin Food Bank website.
In a press release posted on November 2, the SF-Marin Food Bank announced that they anticipated receiving 600 turkeys (10,000 pounds) from Foster Farms on November 11, but are still eager to accept the donations of others as the goal and need of 2,000 turkeys has not yet been met.
The city of San Francisco and the Marin Food Bank have been partners in the fight against hunger in the region for more than 5 years. Over 30,000 households depend on the organization for food each week, where nearly 60 percent of what’s distributed is fresh fruits and vegetables. They also provide nutritional education classes for the community, as well as having an established food-stamp program in effect for those enrolled.
