HOLLYWOOD—There is a new champ at the box-office dethroning the unexpected victory from last week’s winner, “Good Boys.” The sequel “Angel Has Fallen” starring Gerard Butler won audiences over with an impressive $21.2 million haul over the weekend. However, its box-office performance shows the franchise has a bit of fatigue failing to exceed the expectations of “Olympus Has Fallen” ($30.5 million for opening weekend), but nearly matching the success of “London Has Fallen” ($21.5 million for opening weekend).
Dropping to second place was the comedy “Good Boys” with $11.7 million. After two weeks in theaters, the raunchy comedy has amounted over $42 million at the domestic box-office. Landing in third place was the faith based flick “Overcomer” with a solid $8.2 million debut. Fourth place was a victory for “The Lion King” with $8.15 million to bring the domestic tally of the live-action flick to $510 million.
Rounding out the top five was “Hobbs & Shaw” with $8.14 million. The spin-off has since earned over $147 million at the domestic box-office. The only other new debut for the weekend, the thriller “Ready or Not” did not impress audiences debuting in seventh place with a paltry $7.5 million. Don’t expect any new releases at the box-office as we head into Labor Day weekend.
However, don’t be sad as the highly anticipated “It: Chapter Two” arrives on September 6, and with a running time of 2 hours and 49 minutes, I think box-office records are about to be broken yet again, as it becomes the highest rated debut for an R-rated flick ever, not to mention, the largest opening weekend for a horror film.
