SAN FRANCISCO—The Bay Bridge eastern span bike path will extend to Yerba Buena Island by next Summer, and transportation authorities hope it will eventually make its way as far as San Francisco.

After years of debate, the Bay Area Toll Authority committee has voted to pay a consultant up to $10 million for a proposal to facilitate an Oakland-to-San Francisco bicycle crossing.

Currently, the only means of traveling the expanse between the two cities are by car, BART car or ferry. Early estimates price the laying of a bike path on both sides of the 2-mile western suspension span at between $400 and $500 million, a number that will need to decrease in order for the development to succeed.

Arup North America has been given the consulting job, and will need about a year to determine if the project can be feasibly done for a smaller amount.

If successful, the path will span the Bay Bridge.
