HOLLYWOOD—Believe it or not, YouTube fans consider many of their video creators to be celebrities. That is why “Dancing With the Stars,” decided to cast Bethany Mota for season 19. According to published reports, producers for the show had been searching for a female YouTube star, in an attempt to update and attract younger viewers.
Bethany, who has over 8 million subscribers on her two channels, is no stranger to the limelight. She’s the first YouTuber to dance on the show with partner Derek Hough. Definitely, the couple to watch! In only five short years, Mota has her own clothing line and just launched a fragrance with Aeropostale.
So what’s her secret, for success? She’s focused, intelligent, creative and a real down-to-earth person. No wonder, according to Business Insider, the 19-year-old Portuguese beauty is raking in an estimated $40,000 a month from her business ventures. She’s also gracing the cover of Seventeen Magazine, where she talks about her bullies and how she found her voice on the YouTube community.
While YouTube doesn’t disclose much about its finances, many companies have tried to figure out how much the video site actually earns. According to published reports, research firm eMarketer is one of those curious companies that claim that YouTube’s 2014 ad revenue could be a whopping $1.13 billion.
YouTube is surely making money. Another curious company with an estimate is Wall Street’s Jeffries & Co., which estimated the video site’s net revenue at approximately $2.8 billion, growing to $3.5 billion in 2015, according to Variety. One thing is for sure, YouTube is extremely popular, putting YouTube in the running to beat Netflix’s value, which is currently capped at $29 billion.
YouTube is not just for vlogging or beauty; famous celebrities like Barbra Streisand scored over 1.3 million hits with Jimmy Fallon when they sang a medley of duets. Barbra who is releasing a new album compiled entirely of duets with other famous singers. Some of the partners include Stevie Wonder, John Legend, Billy Joel, Andrea Bocelli, Lionel Richie and a “virtual,” duet with Elvis Presley. The 72-year-old Streisand is a veteran performer that never fails to entertain.
A newly compiled and re-mastered CD/DVD combo of the late Whitney Houston’s “live greatest hits,” will be released November 10 by Legacy Records, spanning three decades of recorded television, awards show and concert performances. The most recent performance on “Whitney Houston Live: Her Greatest Performances,” is a 2009 appearance on “Oprah,” where Houston sang an emotional rendition of “I Didn’t Know My Own Strength.” Both the CD and the DVD are also available for pre-order on Amazon and iTunes.
