SAN FRANCISCO—An inmate escaped while being transported to the San Francisco International Airport on Tuesday, January 31, officials said.

Shawn New, 27, is wanted by Kentucky authorities for fraud and ID theft. He was to be flown to Boone county Kentucky via SFO before he escaped from his transport vehicle when it stopped mid-traffic, Sgt. Ray Kelly said.

“At some point, the traffic was stopped. Mr. New jumped out of the backseat of the car and ran down the freeway, handcuffed,” Kelly told NBC Bay Area News.

New proceeded to run south 880 near exit ‘A,’ where he jumped off a wall and disappeared into a nearby neighborhood, authorities noted.

Alameda County’s Sheriff’s officials established a perimeter around Interstate Highway 880 and A Street in Hayward, where the prisoner escaped.

New was last seen near Interstate 880 in Hayward, where he escaped. The Alameda County Sheriff’s Department is currently conducting a search to catch the suspect.

The Alameda County Sheriff’s Department has described the suspect as a white Caucasian male, wearing a blue plaid shirt, blue jeans and brown boots at the time of his escape. Shawn is handcuffed behind his back.
