HOLLYWOOD—It was a battle at the box-office with a ton of new movies arriving in theaters, but those flicks were no match for a little fish named Dory. “Finding Dory” remained at the top spot at the box-office for the second consecutive week with $73.2 million. In less than 10 days, the animated flick is already close to crossing the $300 million mark at the domestic box-office. That’s a massive amount of money for a sequel that was more than 13 years in the making.
Not impressing critics or moviegoers was the sequel “Independence Day: Resurgence” with a disappointing $41.6 million. What? For a flick more than 20 years in the making, one would have expected this sequel to perform far better. Was it the absence of star Will Smith that was the nail in the coffin for this hotly anticipated movie? No, and I’ll share plenty in my review of the action-flick. It’s apparent that 2016 has NOT been a good year for sequels at the box-office; perhaps Hollywood should aim at focusing on better storytelling.
Landing in third place was the comedy “Central Intelligence” with $18.4 million. The Kevin Hart and Dwayne Johnson comedy has so far earned over $70 million at the domestic box-office. Looks like sleeper hit if you ask me. Surprising movie lovers was the Blake Lively shark-thriller “The Shallows” with $16.7 million. Not bad at all for a movie that many didn’t expect to earn big bucks. Looks like a classic shark tale will always pique the interest of youngsters during the summer months.
Rounding out the top five was the Matthew McConaughey drama “Free State of Jones” with an impressive $7.8 million, just edging out the horror flick “The Conjuring 2.” This week ushers in another trio of big flicks as “The Purge: Election Year,” “Tarzan” and “The BFG” all vie for movie goers money during the Fourth of July holiday weekend.
