HOLLYWOOD—I truly hadn’t watched the CBS soap “Beyond the Gates” for the longest time. I was all in when the soap opera first premiered, but something happened where it just lost my interest. However, this recent cross-over event with “The Young and the Restless” has reeled me back in. It was a cross-over event that saw Victor Newman, Abby Newman, Devon Hamilton and Dianne and Kyle come to Fairmont Crest to help Martin Dupree with his political quest.
That was all fun and games, but the tornado that came into town was epic because it injured some key players and the acting from some of the cast was top tier. I’m giving major kudos right now to Colby Nixon for her portrayal of Kat Richardson. I have no clue what it is about the fans of this soap, but some hate Kat, but others love her. I’m in the camp of loving Kat. She can be bratty, but she is fiercely loyal and I love that about her, not to mention she calls things out without sugarcoating them. She might be the most honest person on the soap to her detriment.
Her relationship with Eva, the Devil spawn of Leslie Thomas aka Dana is hilarious. These two women just do not like each other in any capacity, and they are half-sisters, as a result of Ted’s affair, while married to Nicole Dupree. I love Nicole, but I love her sister Dani a bit more. Dani is fiery and unapologetic. Whereas Nicole does her best to stay poised, but I just want to see her flip and literally lose it. I know she has it in her.
The horror of Martin being not out by a fallen tree was so funny. Everybody thought he was dead, and it was a minor head scratch. The big injury was Eva who was trapped in the stairwell and started gushing up blood. Her condition was bad, so much to the point that she was hospitalized and her liver was failing.
With that being said, Eva needed a liver and of course, who will be the one lucky candidate? Ding, ding, it was Kat Richardson. I must admit Kat had every right to be upset at everyone. Not a single person besides Nicole and Smitty were considering Kat’s feelings. I mean Ted, Leslie, Martin, Chelsea, Izaiah, virtually every single person was pressuring her to do something that she was not fully invested to do.
As a viewer, your felt Kat’s frustration and anger, not to mention that acting from Colby; sensational. Write her in for the Supporting Actress Daytime Emmy because her work was perfection from when the tornado hit, to her decision to donate part of her liver to her sister. Here is the problem: Eva is recovering, but Kat not so much. Making the matter worse is the fact that this is what Kat feared; something would happen to her by making the decision to go thru with the surgery after learning she is a match. It was a dream sequence FYI.
I’m eager to see this fallout, because maybe, just maybe someone besides her aunt Dani will give Kat the benefit of the doubt. I sometimes wish that Kat was Dani’s daughter, because Naomi, gosh that character is annoying as hell. Not to mention she seems so frustrated with Jacob who is grieving the loss of his pal Derek. I see the chemistry between Jacob and Kat, and I feel it, but I’m not sure if the writers will go there with those two, but it would be a shocker.
Leslie is a great villain, but even a villain has to have their comeuppance, and that has yet to unfold for Leslie, which is long overdue. When you do bad things like nearly kill someone by running them off the road, there has to be consequences there, and Leslie has yet to face a single one which is one of the issues viewers have with “Beyond the Gates.” Yeah, she lost one friend, but I’m certain in due time, she will gain her back.
Dani cheated on Andre with Bill while trapped in that elevator during the tornado. Why Dani, why would you spill that information to Vanessa of all individuals. Vanessa cannot hold water, and she is literally sleeping with Joey, the man who murdered her husband, Doug. Which explains why Deanna continues to light her mother’s ass any chance she can get.
Bill is keeping a secret from Hayley, but Hayley is keeping a whopper of a secret from him. She’s trying to kill him and has been since she put the bullseye on him as a target. Things on “Beyond the Gates” have picked back up to a degree that has my attention that it didn’t have before. New episodes of “Beyond the Gates” airs weekdays at 2 p.m. on CBS.
