UNITED STATES—The Democratic National Convention, which was held from August 17 through August 20 at Wisconsin Center in Milwaukee, failed to address issues pertaining to riots across the United States.
Garrett Foster of Austin and Dave Patrick Underwood of Pinole were killed during a protest. Foster, a demonstrator, died when an unknown vehicle barreled into crowd and shot him. Meanwhile, Underwood, the federal officer, was shot and killed after a shooting in Oakland, while he was on duty during a George Floyd protest.
From a protest timeline shown on the city of Portland’s website, Portland has experienced violence and riots each night since May 29. The Portland Police Bureau reported rioters have attacked state and local officers at the East Precinct.
Other cities, including Seattle, New York City, Minnesota, Chicago, and Texas, have experienced similar incidents. The deaths of Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor has lead to protest throughout the country where the police have been forced to keep the peace in the respective regions of Atlanta, Minneapolis, Portland, Detroit and New York City to name a few.
During the DNC, the party discussed hope for the future, the opportunity for the young generation, and the season of darkness in America. As a 2020 presidential candidate, Joe Biden talked about: economic crisis, racial justice, the pandemic crisis, and climate change. He talked about how Americans are impacted by such crises by highlighting the numbers of people who died from the coronavirus, unemployment numbers, people who have lost their health insurance, and impacts on businesses.
Biden announced if he becomes the next President of the United States he would control the virus by implementing the national strategy, which he has been laying out since March, by having a medical team to develop and deploy rapid tests with results immediately. Secondly, he will make sure the country has enough facilities to make medical supplies and schools have resources needed.
At the end of the Democratic National Convention, Biden claimed that uniting the country is the only way to move forward during this challenging period.
