SAN FRANCISCO—An elementary school was temporarily evacuated after smells of gas lingered in the building on Friday, January 13.

According to reports, staff at Leonard R. Flynn Elementary School, located at 3125 Cesar Chavez Street, first noticed the smell of gas around 6:00 a.m.

Around 8:30 a.m. the smell remained in the building, prompting school officials to contact the authorities.

Students and staff were removed from the building around 9:00 a.m. as a precautionary measure, the San Francisco Fire Department said.

When crews from Pacific Gas and Electric Co. arrived they could not detect any smell or odor of gas in the building and surrounding areas, said Lt. Jonathan Baxter of the San Francisco Fire Department.

Andrea Menniti, a spokeswoman for PG&E, concluded the smell was not related to the public utility’s equipment. “Our crews used gas detectors and the area was made safe,” Menniti told the SF Gate.

The SFFD also responded to a potential gas leak, but did not detect any smell of gas, said Baxter.

Students and staff returned to school around 10 :15 a.m.
