SAN FRANCISCO—On Friday, June 12 at 12:20 a.m. near Mariposa Street., a vehicle drove through a guardrail on the 18th Street overpass, located between the Potrero Hill and Dogpatch neighborhoods crashing onto the southbound lanes of the freeway below where it landed upside-down.
The vehicle later burst into flames. Four people escaped and the San Francisco Fire Department transported them to local hospitals where they are recovering. The driver was burned alive and pronounced dead at the scene. The name and age of the driver has not been disclosed to the public.
The accident caused overnight closures on southbound I-280 on-ramps, affecting late-night traffic. It closed-off Brannan Street/Sixth Street, King Street, Mariposa Street and southbound highway lanes. It reopened by 7 a.m. The California Highway Patrol and San Francisco Police Department are investigating the cause of this accident, but initial findings show that alcohol may be a factor.
