SAN FRANCISCO—Since 2006, the Golden Gate Bridge Physical Suicide Deterrent System has been in effect. The proposal developed the Net System, which would create a net that would be placed below the Golden Gate Bridge to serve as a deterrent for those who have fallen victim to wanting to commit suicide.

The Suicide Deterrent Net Construction Project, headed by Oakland-based Shimmick Construction, was awarded by The Bridge District.

Funding the Net System was estimated at a cost of $66 million in 2014. The bid was nearly doubled to $142 million.

The plan includes a stainless steel net that will be installed 20 feet below the sidewalk and will extend out another 20 feet. Construction is set to begin in 2017 and is expected to be completed by 2021.
