SAN FRANCISCO—On Tuesday, November 12, the SFDA’s Office disclosed that Jovany Portades, 34, has been charged in connection to a slashing on a BART train on November 2. Portades is scheduled to be arraigned on November 12, 2024, in Department 16 of the Hall of Justice at 1:30 p.m.. He is charged with one count of attempted murder (PC 664/187(a)).

The criminal complaint includes allegations that the defendant personally and intentionally used a deadly weapon in the commission of this crime (PC 12022(b)(1)), that he personally and intentionally inflicted great bodily injury to the victim (PC 12022.7(a)), and that he is ineligible for probation (PC 1203(k)). Prosecutors moved to have him detained pending trial because of the public safety risk he poses.

According to court documents, on November 2, 2024, at 8 a.m. Portades got on an Antioch-bound train at Balboa BART Station. He allegedly attacked a female passenger on that train without provocation as it approached 24th Street/Mission Station. Portades allegedly attacked the victim from behind with a knife, cutting and slashing at her neck, face and mouth while she tried to fight him off.

As the train arrived at the 24th Street/Mission BART Station the defendant allegedly ran off as soon as the doors opened. After the attack, the victim was able to get off the train and get help from BART and San Francisco Police officers on scene. She was later transported to a local hospital with life threatening injuries.

Portades was arrested on November 3, by BART Police at the Fruitvale Station after having been spotted by an alert station agent. He was taken into custody without incident.
