SAN FRANCISCO—On Thursday, March 21, the SF District Attorney’s Office disclosed that Mohamad Alajtal, 40, of San Francisco, was convicted after a trial by jury for sexually assaulting an elderly woman. He was convicted of assault with intent to commit sexual penetration of an unconscious person (PC 220(a)(1)), and two counts of sexual penetration of an unconscious person (PC 289(d)(1).

The SF District Attorney’s Office indicated in a press release, that according to testimony and other evidence presented at trial, on October 24, 2018, the victim (age 70) believed she was having a vivid dream in which someone’s finger was in her vagina and anus. Upon realizing that it was not a dream, she sat upright in bed, looked to the side of the bed, and saw the defendant, a relative, kneeling on the floor beside her.

The victim screamed and the defendant immediately told her that he had not done anything and was only looking for his phone. The victim called 911 and officers arrived on scene within minutes. An evaluation of the victim at San Francisco General Hospital’s Rape Trauma Center showed evidence of digital penetration and the victim’s DNA was located on Alajtal’s fingers.

The case against the defendant was successfully prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Jamal Anderson, with assistance from paralegal Yessenia Oropeza and Victim Advocate Priscilla Portillo who worked closely with the victim throughout the pendency of this case. Prosecutors were able to develop a strong case against Mr. Alajtal because of the outstanding investigation of the San Francisco Police Department’s Special Victim’s Unit.

“For more than five years the victim and her family have waited for justice in this case and with this verdict the jurors have provided just that,” said Assistant District Attorney Jamal Anderson. “I would like to thank the jury for their service and commend the victim for her courage and resilience.”

Alajtal was remanded into custody following the reading of the verdict. He faces up to 10 years in state prison for his crimes and must register as a sex offender for life pursuant to Penal Code section 290. Sentencing will be scheduled on May 21, 2024.
