SAN FRANCISCO—In less than 24 hours, the Niners lost an All-Pro linebacker and gained another.

On Monday, outside linebacker Aldon Smith was officially reinstated following his nine-game suspension for violating the NFL’s personal conduct and substance abuse policy.

On Tuesday, the team officially announced they will be without inside-linebacker Patrick Willis for the remainder of the season. Willis, who has been nursing a left toe injury, will now require surgery to repair the damaged muscle.
The loss of Willis, a five time All-Pro, will be difficult to overcome for a SF team that has struggled to maintain positive momentum throughout its up-and-down 5-4 season. The heart-and-soul of San Francisco’s defense, Willis’ job will be assumed by standout rookie Chris Borland for the remainder of the season.
Since replacing Willis, Borland, a third-round pick out of Wisconsin, has been a revelation, recording over 15 tackles in consecutive games against St. Louis and New Orleans.
In addition to the return of Smith, one of the the league’s premier pass-rushers, the Niners are hoping for the return of their third All-Pro linebacker, NaVorro Bowman, who has struggled to return from the ACL injury he sustained in last year’s playoff loss to Seattle.
Once cleared to practice, Bowman will have a 21-day window to return to action or join Willis on the team’s injured reserve list.
