SANTA MONICA—The Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office revealed on Thursday, May 10 that Redmond James O’Neal, 33, of Santa Monica was charged with robbing a convenience store at knifepoint and possessing drugs. O’Neal was charged with six counts in case SA097989: one count each of second-degree robbery, assault with a deadly weapon, possession of a smoking device, possession of an injection/ingestion device and two counts of possessing a controlled substance.
The felony complaint includes a special allegation that the defendant personally used a deadly and dangerous weapon, a knife, during the commission of the robbery. The charging document alleges the defendant was previously convicted of possession of a controlled substance in jail in 2009 and possession of a firearm by a felon in 2015. Prosecutors asked for bail to be set at $125,000.
On Tuesday, May 8, O’Neal allegedly armed himself with a knife, entered a Santa Monica convenience store and demanded cash from the clerk, prosecutors noted. Police were called and O’Neal was arrested near the store. When authorities took O’Neal into custody, they reportedly discovered that the defendant was in possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia.
Redmond O’Neal is the son of Ryan O’Neal and Farrah Fawcett. Redmond has previously had run-ins with the law in the past. In February 2010, he was ordered to return to a residential drug treatment program. He was arrested in December 2009 for violating his probation in connection to past drug charges. Redmond was arrested and charged with taking drugs into the Pitchess Detention Center, where he had been visiting an inmate. Both he and his father were arrested in September 2008, in their Malibu home after deputies conducted a probation search and found methamphetamines in their residence. In June 2010, Redmond graduated from the drug treatment program.
Redmond’s mother and Ryan’s long-time companion, Farrah Fawcett, had passed away in Santa Monica after a long battle with cancer. Redmond had been the voice actor for “Squirt” in the 1998 animated series “The Brave Little Toaster.” His father had starred in movies such as “The Driver” (1978), “Zero Effect” (1998) and “People I Know” (2002). His mother most notably starred in the ’70s television series, “Charlie’s Angels.”
If convicted as charged, the defendant could face a maximum possible sentence of 10 years in state prison. The case is still under investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department.
