Sports Die-Hards!

The idea of letting a sports team ruining your day is beyond crazy.

UNITED STATES—I love the fall because it ushers in the start of football season. Rather its little league, high school, college or professional. I’ll be honest I’m more of a college fan because the stakes seem a bit higher, we all have our preferences. For the past 2 years I have been attending my nephews Saturday football games. If you were to ask me 3 years ago if I saw him as a football star I would argue no, but the kid has talent and I’m not just saying that because he’s blood.

He can play quarterback, he can play defense, and he can play running back. This weekend’s game was another victory for the Michigan Wolverines who dominated against their opponents leaving them scoreless. There were like two epic moments in the game where the crowd including myself went bonkers.

Flash-forward to later in the evening where my alma mater, the Michigan State Spartans were doing battle against the Oregon Ducks; I’ve always been keen to watching the game in my game sanctuary if you say the least, but would I lose my cool if the team lost? No.

It’s a game people, it’s not the end of the world, but for a die-hard sports fan it is. By the way, the Spartans were victorious, but the same can’t be said for the Detroit Lions. I can’t even begin to fathom why so many family members and friends that I know place faith in this organization.

It’s not me beating up on the Lions, it’s the fact that so many people get into funky moods when they lose. Someone had the audacity to tell me, “The Lions losing can just ruin my entire week.” I paused for a second because I was taken aback. How the hell could a sports game ruin their entire week, it’s just a GAME!

Die-hard sports fans get so emotionally invested in their favorite sports teams they forget about everything else. I mean I’ve seen people who are on cloud nine literally turn into a nightmare because their favorite sports team lost a game. You don’t’ always win people and what type of lesson are we teaching are children by acting like complete buffoons every time we don’t get our way? Ever wonder why children throw tantrums; lots of that behavior comes from the many things they see adults do.

I have to say the state of Michigan is indeed a sports frenzy city. Rather it’s the Detroit Lions, Detroit Tigers, Detroit Red Wings or the Detroit Pistons, fans will do almost any and everything to show their appreciation. In doing so, they might go on week long rants about why their favorite sports team lost a game, who was responsible for the loss and other countless speculation to justify their bad mood. If a sports team losing can cause someone to be in a foul mood, where is our world going?

I’ll be the first to admit that I dress myself in my alma mater’s attire anything we have a game, but if we lose we lose, I’m not about to burn down a couch, curse someone out or get pissy drunk to prove a point.

Keep your emotions in check; don’t allow your sports teams to control you. Remember they feed off of your energy. The more depressed you become about a loss, the more depressed the team becomes. It’s a domino effect; your negative energy is being transferred to them without you even knowing what you’re transferring over.
