HOLLYWOOD—It was quite the weekend at the box-office. Movies that were expected to underperform brought in moviegoers in waves. The thriller “The Perfect Guy” starring Sanaa Lathan and Michael Ealy rose to the top with more than $26.7 million to tackle the top spot from “War Room.”
Followed close behind was M. Night Shyamalan’s twisty thriller “The Visit” with an impressive $25.7 million. I seriously fathomed this flick was going to flop; I mean Shyamalan hasn’t had a hit since “Signs” which was back in the early 2000s. Rarely have two films right after the Labor Day holiday grossed more than $50 million combined for the top spots at the box-office.
Landing in third place is the inspirational drama “War Room” with an additional $7.4 million to its tally. After only 3 weeks in theaters, the movie has already grossed more than $40 million at the domestic box-office. “A Walk in the Woods” took fourth place with $4.7 million. Rounding out the top five was “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation” with $4.2 million. The fifth installment in the “Mission: Impossible” franchise is certain to cross the $200 million mark at the domestic box-office by the end of the week.
This weekend sees the release of the crime drama “Black Mass” starring Johnny Depp is a role that is generating a bit of awards buzz for the actor.
