SAN FRANCISCO—On Monday, August 31, the Walgreens on Market St. will close according to Walgreens Spokesperson, Erin Loveher. Pictures of empty shelves and videos of people openly shoplifting at Walgreens in San Francisco has been circulating all over Twitter. While tweets from locals have insulated that the Walgreens at 1301 Market St. will close due to mass theft, Loveher stated that the closure is due to their lease expiring.
Proposition 47 which was dubbed “The Safe Neighborhoods and Schools Act” by former California Attorney General, Kamala Harris was passed in 2014. The proposition classified certain crimes as misdemeanors instead of felonies. As a result, ‘petty’ thefts under $950 face little to no consequence. Tweets form locals documented shoplifting at Walgreens since 2014.
