SAN FRANCISCO—A San Francisco Department of Public Worked employee was killed while on the job on August 28. Alvin Andrews, 52, was working alongside several others cleaning up the streets in the Bayview district when he was struck by a garbage truck near Newcomb Avenue and Quint Street.

Officials from the San Francisco Fire Department arrived at the scene of the incident where Andrews was pronounced dead on the scene.

Rachel Gordon, spokesperson for the Department of Public Works released the following statement: “San Francisco Public Works is deeply saddened and shaken by this tragic accident involving one of our trucks, and our heartfelt condolences go out to the victim’s family, loved ones and friends. The San Francisco Police Department is conducting an investigation into what occurred, and we are cooperating fully as investigators work to determine exactly what happened. The accident, which occurred a little after 9 a.m., involved one of our truckers driving a packer (garbage) truck on Quint near Jerrold. The victim was a member of a city crew working with the driver to remove illegally dumped materials in the Bayview.”

Mayor Edwin M. Lee today issued the following statement regarding Andrew’s death.

“On behalf of the City and County of San Francisco, I extend my deepest condolences to the family of Alvin Andrews who tragically died in an accident this morning while working for our Department of Public Works. The safety of our workforce is our highest priority, and this incident will be thoroughly investigated. Our thoughts and prayers remain with Alvin’s family and friends during this time of mourning.”

The San Francisco Police Department is currently investigating the incident to determine the exact cause of what happened.
