SAN FRANCISCO—On Monday, June 17, BART introduced a new way for customers to pay for parking via a new carpool parking program. The Carpool to BART parking program will be available at Dublin/Pleasanton, Orinda, Antioch, and Warm Springs stations to begin and is scheduled to expand if the program proves to be successful.

The program incentivizes users to carpool by allowing them to pay through the official BART mobile app and to park in a permitted section of the parking lot where it does not fill up as fast as the daily fee section.

“This new program modernizes the payment process, something our riders have been asking for… Carpooling to BART takes cars off the road, helping keep our region moving while also reducing emissions. About 5% of our riders carpool to BART and we want to encourage others to try it and then make it part of their daily routine,” said Board Vice President Rebecca Saltzman.

The program accepts credit cards, debit cards, Venmo, and PayPal as methods of payment. The program will allow for a more efficient way for users to pay with the app. Currently, drivers must wait in line and pay with cash or set up an EZ rider account where they load up a prepaid card before using it. BART claims that the new system will “crack down on carpool cheats” by requiring both users of the carpool program to enter the fare gates after their payment.
