HOLLYWOOD—Halloween is indeed upon us, however, it was not a scary movie that tantalized moviegoers, but a comedy and a sequel at best that reigned supreme. Critics might have hated the flick, but America sure didn’t as Tyler Perry’s “Boo 2!: A Madea Halloween” laughed its way to the top spot of the box-office. The sequel took in $21.7 million during its debut weekend, slightly less than the $28 million its predecessor made in 2016. There were plenty of other options at the multiplex over the weekend, but none of them seemed to matter.

The sci-fi epic “Geostorm” opened to a dreadful $13.3 million to earn second place. Not good at all for a disaster flick that cost over $100 million to make. To be honest while most of these flicks are never Oscar-caliber, they are at least entertaining, but with so much disaster from Mother Nature lately, it was apparent audiences wanted their entertainment to be a bit lighter in tone. Last week’s victor, “Happy Death Day” dropped to third place adding $9.4 million to its tally to bring its domestic haul to just over $40 million in 2 weeks.

“Blade Runner 2049” earned fourth place with a $7.2 million finish. After nearly 3 weeks in multiplexes, the sequel has earned just over $70 million. Still a far cry from the amount it cost to produce the flick. Rounding out the top five was the drama “Only the Brave” with $6 million. Another debut that got off to a frigid star was the Michael Fassbender thriller “The Snowman” which took in only $3.4 million this weekend. Yeah, that might be on the biggest flops of the year people. I was eagerly waiting for this flick and it is as disappointing as its debut.

Well with Halloween less than 10 days away, audiences will get the opportunity for some thrills at the box-office with the return of everyone’s favorite puppet. Still stumped? Don’t be I’m referring to the eighth installment, yes that’s right in the “Saw” franchise, amply titled “Jigsaw” that opens this weekend. Are you ready to play a game?
