SAN FRANCISCO—Todd Sutton, a carpenter who released a raccoon from a trap while working on a San Francisco job site, has been fired from his position.

The raccoon had been reportedly troubling the progress of workers at the construction site, leading to the contracting of professional trappers to capture and euthanize the animal.

Sutton was fired after freeing the raccoon from the SoMo construction site.

Arriving to work in the morning, Sutton claims he discovered the raccoon inside a food trap and brought it to his truck, uncaging the creature and awaiting assistance from local Animal Control.

“I was just doing what I thought was right,” Sutton said to the San Francisco Chronicle. “He was just a little baby. I said, ‘I’m not going to let this happen. I’m going to do what is necessary for this raccoon.’”

Expecting to only be removed from the South of Market project, Sutton’s superiors at RFJ Meiswinkel chose to fire the carpenter outright.

“We were concerned he had taken something that didn’t belong to him and left the job site,” Matt Rossie, a Webcor VP said. “We asked Mr. Sutton to go home for the day, and that for him to remove any property from the job site is basically theft and it wasn’t going to be tolerated.”
