SAN FRANCISCO—An officer-involved shooting transpired on Saturday, September 23 after officers from the San Francisco Police Department’s Central Station arrived to an apartment on the unit block of Salmon Street about a domestic violence situation involving a weapon.

The SFPD indicated the incident occurred at approximately 11:35 p.m. where a male subject was reported to be in the apartment with his wife and two children, ages 5 and 11. After arriving on the scene, officers heard yelling from the apartment, and later heard a gunshot come from the apartment. Extra resources were called to the scene including the SFPD Tactical Unit and the Crisis Hostage Negotiation Team. Negotiators were able to make contact with the subject and initiated in a dialogue with him throughout the morning.

At approximately 2:50 a.m., the male subject stopped speaking with negotiators. A second gunshot was heard from inside the apartment. Fearing for the safety of the hostages, the tactical team entered the apartment and an officer involved shooting (OIS) occurred. The victims were rescued from the building, treated and released from the scene by paramedics. The male subject was taken to the hospital where he later died. The name of the individual has not yet been disclosed to the public.

Additional details will be released as it becomes available. As part of the SFPD’s commitment towards transparency and accountability, a town hall meeting regarding the incident will be held within 10 days.

The incident is being investigated by the SFPD Homicide Detail, the SFPD Internal Affairs Division, the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office, the Department of Police Accountability and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
