HOLLYWOOD—“The Fate of the Furious’” grip on the box-office is now over. The highly anticipated sequel, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” opened to massive numbers at the box-office to kick off the summer box-office movie season. The sequel debut in the top spot with an impressive $145 million debut, more than $50 million than its predecessor. On a global scale, the comic-book flick has earned over $427 million. Wow, it seems a staple nowadays for flicks to cross the $1 billion mark in box-office receipts globally speaking.
Not even close to “Guardians” was “The Fate of the Furious” which dropped to second place with $8.5 million. The eighth chapter in the franchise has finally crossed the $200 million mark at the domestic box-office. Globally speaking, the flick has earned over $1.15 billion. Third place was a victory for the animated flick “The Boss Baby” which added $6.2 million to bring its domestic tally to over $156 million.
Landing in fourth place was the comedy “How to be a Latin Lover” with $5.3 million. Rounding out the top five was the Disney hit “Beauty and the Beast” with $4.9 million. With that haul, the flick now stands at $487 million domestically and is likely to end its run in theaters by crossing the $500 million mark.
I predict “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” will reign supreme at the box-office next weekend as well, however, everything changes come May 19 when “Alien: Covenant” is unleashed onto audiences.
