HOLLYWOOD—It looked like audiences wanted a good scare to kick-off the Friday the 13th weekend, as the horror comedy “Happy Death Day” slayed the box-office. The flick, which watches a woman relive her death over and over again until she discovers her killer rose to the top spot with an impressive $26.5 million debut. Not bad for a flick that only cost around $5 million to produce. You know what that means: expect a sequel in the near future people.
Falling to second place was last weekend’s box-office champ, “Blade Runner 2049” which added $15.1 million to its tally to bring its domestic tally to just over $60 million. Not good America, not good at all, so it looks like the highly anticipated sequel won’t even earn $100 million at the domestic box-office before ending its run. Action star Jackie Chan returned to theaters with “The Foreigner” which landed in third place with $12.8 million, not a bad debut for a flick that is not all action, but has plenty of dramatic chops from its stars Chan and Pierce Bronson.
A craze clown continues to scare audiences, as “It” landed in fourth place with $6.1 million. Since its release in theaters back in September, the horror remake has earned over $314 million at the domestic box-office. Rounding out the top five was the drama “The Mountain Between Us” with $5.7 million. This weekend sees the return of Tyler Perry to the box-office with “Boo: A Madea Halloween 2” and the thriller “The Snowman” starring Michael Fassbender.
