SAN FRANCISCO—The Geneva Car Barn and Powerhouse is being renovated. The historic property will be a center for the Performing Arts Workshop, a nonprofit. Youth from OMI, Lakeview, and Excelsior will have access to the services provided by the center.

The Geneva Office Building and Car Barn was opened in 1901 for the San Francisco and San Mateo Electric Railway Company. The Powerhouse was added in 1903 to provide electricity to the streetcar line. However, the Powerhouse was damaged by the San Francisco earthquake in 1906 and was not fully repaired until 1910. The Geneva Office Building became the 180th San Francisco Landmark in 1985.

The San Francisco Recreation and Park Department acquired the Geneva Car Barn and Powerhouse from the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency in 2004. Classes are currently being provided remotely because of the coronavirus pandemic.
