HOLLYWOOD—The final weekend of September made for an an interesting weekend at the box office. The animated sequel “Hotel Transylvania 2” dominated theaters with an impressive $47.5 million. That’s a huge win for the flick, which surpassed the opening weekend for its predecessor by a few million. This is the first animated flick in theaters in a few weeks; so, it makes sense for such a domination at the multiplexes.
Landing in second place was the feel-good flick “The Intern” with around $18 million. Not a bad debut, but some people expected a much higher return with star power like Oscar-winners Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro.
Last week’s champion, “The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials,” fell to third place with $14 million. After less than two weeks in theaters, the flick has already crossed the $50 million mark at the domestic box office.
The climatic thriller “Everest” continues to wow audiences, nabbing fourth place with just over $13 million. Rounding out the top five was the biopic “Black Mass” with $11.5 million. For a film that was not very impressive with critics, audiences are a bit intrigued. Looks like Johnny Depp will indeed be a candidate in the “Best Actor” race this awards season.
This weekend sees the release of the hotly-anticipated drama “The Martian,” starring Matt Damon and directed by Ridley Scott.
