SAN JOSE, CA—On the evening of Thursday, May 8, 2025, a two-vehicle collision on Interstate 280 resulted in the death of a pregnant woman and her unborn child, according to Bay City News.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reports that the accident took place around 7:34 p.m. on southbound I-280 near the Bird Avenue off-ramp.
Authorities stated that a green Honda Civic was traveling southbound when it crossed multiple lanes of traffic and collided with a Ford pickup truck. The impact caused the driver of the Civic, a 25-year-old pregnant woman from San Jose, to be ejected from the vehicle.
Emergency crews arriving on the scene, initiated CPR on the unresponsive woman, who was later transported to Valley Medical Center. Despite medical efforts, she and her unborn child were pronounced dead at the hospital.
Two children were also inside the Honda Civic at the time of the crash. According to CHP, they did not appear to be physically injured but were taken to the hospital for evaluation as a precaution. No further injuries were reported.
Three lanes of the freeway were closed for approximately two hours as CHP and emergency personnel responded to the incident and cleared the wreckage. Traffic congestion extended beyond the immediate area while crews worked to reopen lanes by 9:30 p.m.
It remains unclear whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the collision. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have not yet released the identities of those involved, pending notification of next of kin.
Single-Vehicle Collisions
In some cases, investigations may reveal that even in a single-vehicle accident, nearby drivers or unsafe road features share some responsibility. California’s Comparative Negligence rule means that, even if those injured in accidents are found partially at fault, they may still be eligible to receive partial compensation for damages.
