CHICAGO, IL—On Wednesday, August 19, a 9-year-old boy and his 27-year-old mother were shot in the South Austin neighborhood on the west side of Chicago.

According to the Chicago Police Department (CPD), the shooting occurred in the 300 block of North Central Avenue near Lake Street at 1:15 p.m. The mother was with her son on the sidewalk with a group of people, when the shooting occurred.

David Brown, the Superintendent of the Chicago Police Department said two people got out of a car and pulled out guns firing shots at the group of people. They fled from the scene, but the suspects were captured and our in police custody.

The two victims were transported to Stroger Hospital. Officials say the boy is in serious condition. Both victims sustained injuries to their lower backs and are in stable condition now.

Officials indicate that the two victims were not the suspects’ intended targets. The investigation is ongoing.

“If you have any information about who did this cowardly act that struck a mother and a 9-year-old young boy, please come forward,” Brown told reporters.
