SAN FRANCISCO—The house at 152 4th Street in San Francisco, infamously known as the “mummy house,” has been taken off the market as quickly as it was put on.

The seven-room home was listed at $928,000 on June 21, and was officially sold to an unknown buyer for $1,029,500 on July 2, according to Zephyr Real Estate.

It was given the nickname back in April, when the mummified body of a 90-year-old woman was found as the house was being put up for auction. According to authorities, the body was discovered wrapped in a blanket underneath ceiling-high collections of trash.

The woman’s corpse was determined to have been in her state for five years, during which time her 65-year-old daughter occupied the second floor of the house.

One of the neighbors speculated that the daughter had a hard time letting go of her mother. Others believed the daughter to be “delusional,” as she often spoke of her mother as if she were still alive.

Potential owners of any property in this state are entitled to information about its history, including any deaths that may have happened during the three years prior to their buying. Since the woman’s death in the house happened five years ago, listing information on real estate sites like Zillow or SocketSite, as well as the realtor, were not required to disclose that information.

San Francisco County District Supervisor Eric Mar reported that over the course of four days, every inch of the house was scrubbed. Pest control was also involved in the clean-up efforts, as rodents and spiders were apparently infesting the home.
