HOLLYWOOD—The music industry is mourning the loss of a legend, as Prince passed away on Thursday, April 21 at the age of 57. TMZ was the first to break the news about the musician’s death, whose body was found in an elevator at his Paisley Park home in Minnesota. An exact cause of Prince’s death has not yet been disclosed to the public, as authorities are still investigating the case.
Prince, whose real name is Prince Rogers Nelson, had a medical emergency last Friday, April 15 that caused him to make an emergency landing in Illinois. The musician cancelled two shows in the wake of the illness, where reports noted Prince was battling the flu.
Prince who was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota started his career in the late 70s, when he released his debut album “For You.” He followed up that album with “Prince” in 1979 that went platinum and produced the hits “Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad?” and “I Wanna Be Your Lover.”
One of the musician’s greatest albums was the soundtrack for the 1984 film “Purple Rain” that helped the rock, R&B, funk, hip-hop, disco and jazz star earn an Oscar for Best Original Song Score.
The album stayed No. 1 on the Billboard 200 charts for 24 consecutive weeks and sold over 13 million copies. Hits from the album included “When Doves Cry” and “Let’s Go Crazy” which both peaked at #1 on the charts. Other big hits for Prince included, “Kiss,” “Musicology” and “Call My Name.”
He sold over 100 million records worldwide during his career and earned a total of seven Grammy Awards. He also has a Golden Globe award on his mantle as well. He was inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004.
He performed at the half-time show during Super Bowl XLI in 2007. He released over 40 studio albums during his near four-decade career. His last studio albums being “HITnRUN Phase One” and “HITnRUN Phase Two” in 2015.
His passing left many celebrities heading to social media to pay their respects to the icon. Pop icon Madonna released the following statement on her Instagram account about the musician. “He Changed The World!! A True Visionary. What a loss. I’m Devastated. This Is Not A Love Song.”
“The View” star Whoopi Goldberg tweeted, “This is what it sounds like when doves cry… Prince R.I.P. Condolences to his family & 2 us all.” Rock-star Gene Simmons tweeted, “PRINCE, sad to say, has passed on!!! He was a Giant. My deep condolences go out to his family, friends and fans.”
He married singer and dancer Mayte Garcia in 1996. They later divorced in 1999. Prince was working on memoir “The Beautiful Ones” at the time of his passing. An autopsy is expected to be performed on the singer Friday to determine the exact cause of death.
