SAN FRANCISCO—Negative attention continues to follow Aldon Smith.

The San Francisco 49ers are investigating reports that the All-Pro linebacker was drinking with former teammate Ray McDonald and a woman who claims she was sexually assaulted by McDonald the night before.

The incident concerning McDonald, under investigation by local authorities, allegedly took place on December 14, and was enough for the team to cut ties with the defensive lineman.

The possibility that Smith was drinking with McDonald the following night could prove damning for Smith’s dominant, yet troubled career with the Niners.

Smith, who has already served a nine-game suspension for his various off-field issues, including a 2013 DUI, is currently serving three years probation and is forbidden by the team to drink alcohol. According to Smith’s agent Doug Hendrickson, the linebacker is tested twice per week and has never tested positive.

Though some of argued that Smith’s prodigious talent will keep him on the team, San Francisco General Manager Ted Baalke vehemently refuted these claims.

“Absolutely not,” said Baalke. “And I think anyone that knows football, and not saying that you don’t, but I think anybody that has seen Ray McDonald play—Ray’s played at a very high level for a long time. So I don’t look at it as, you’ve mentioned there, that at all.”
